SPACE AND TIME

The flowing of thermal water, sacred and beneficial, has marked our land’s appearance since ancient times. Water courses, wells and small lakes created by the Earth’s thermal activity have defined the Euganean Area’s history, settlements, the growth of economy and the flourishing of the culture. In the middle of everything there was the sacred lake, anciently focus of thermal activity and epicentre of the divine dimension.

The sacred lake is in the middle of the museum too: as it once served as an intermediary for reaching out to the gods, it now acts as a portal to reach the heart of the exhibition. From the recount of thermal activity and its ancient context, the lake, projected on the floor, becomes interactive at foot passage and transports you into the history of the Euganean area and its inseparable thermal tradition.

Thermal activity and the territory, the two souls of the museum, are thus not divided, but united, from the sacred lake waters, just as it used to be.

If you think you know all about thermal activity, and that nothing can surprise you… brace yourself, you will be transformed into a drop of water in our immersive room.

Together we will follow the long path of thermal water, from its origin underground until its spillage as steam, mineral waters and mud.

We will discover then how the Euganean Hills, on which the museum grows, originated and how their formation is tightly connected with the phenomenon of thermal activity.

If thermal water could fulfil your deepest desires, what would you ask it to fulfil?

In this path we will live, as ancient people did, the mystery of thermal events and their connection with a divine presence capable of extinguishing problems from body and mind.

Then we will try on our skin the ancient inebriation of talking to a “thermal” modern oracle, capable of predicting our future.

Euganean Thermae

A footprint
is forever

You will be caught by surprise when you will find out that a cat can leave its mark in history as much as an entire nation.

We will follow together the traces left by our ancestors, and their exploiting of thermal resources, in the area of the Euganean Hills. We will be amazed by the longevity of giant works, come to this day, and we will investigate even the smallest footprint left by the ancient inhabitants of this land.

Archaeology

If these walls could talk

If you think that “dig up the past” is just a figure of speech, maybe you don’t know (yet) how much information can be deduced from a dig.

Together we will look up the findings from the archaeological sites of the Euganean area and, in particular, of Montegrotto Terme, in order to reconstruct the history of what was one of the most flourishing areas for what it concerns architectural roman works.
Digging in the past we will then find ourselves guided inside the reconstruction of the Via Neroniana Villa, one of the most majestic evidences of roman architecture and decoration. Alongside the Villa we will be able to reconstruct the history of its inhabitants through the centuries (and make acquaintance with them!).

What if we told you that one the most famous rebranding of history has concerned the Euganean Thermae?

We will discover how the long tradition of the Thermae as a curative place connected with the supernatural dimension, but also as a space for selfcare and entertainment in the Roman era, gradually turned into decadence during the Middle-ages.

We will then meet Salvatore Mandruzzato, the man who, in the XVIII century, was responsible for a new discovery of thermal activity with a new scientific approach. Thanks to him, but not only, a new image of the Thermae was born, the one we now know of, where the wellness of the body is the result of intrinsic properties of thermal water.
