After a phase of scientific research and site inspections in the Euganean Hills area, the Museum spaces have also been transformed into a laboratory for experimentation and co-creation
The museum del termalismo antico e del territorio Montegrotto Terme has also become a meeting place between research and art thanks to “Thermal Alchemy”, This project was born as part of the European residencies of the S+T+Arts Aqua Motion platform. The initiative is a partner of the UNESCO Water Museums Network (WAMU-NET), of which the Museum is an active member, and promotes new visions dedicated to the protection and enhancement of water resources through dialogue between art, science, technology and local communities.
Designed by the contemporary artist Sara Bonaventura, The project began in the fall of 2025 with a phase of scientific research and site visits in the Euganean Hills area, then evolved into an intense process of prototyping and artistic production. Thus, in the following months, the Museum's spaces were transformed into a laboratory for experimentation and co-creation.
The end result is aimmersive video installation which connects the deep geology of thermal waters with collective memory and the very origin of life. The artwork draws inspiration from the most recent scientific theories that thermal springs represent one of the primordial environments in which the first forms of life on Earth developed. The protagonists of the narrative are cyanobacteria, microscopic organisms capable of producing oxygen through photosynthesis and radically transforming the Earth's atmosphere, enabling the evolution of complex life. Through an evocative "Cosmic Calendar," 15 minutes of images condense 4.5 billion years of evolution, offering the audience a reflection on the profound connection between water, microorganisms, the environment, and human civilization.
The installation was previewed at the inauguration of the “Water Dream Memory” exhibition The exhibition, hosted at Palazzo Zorzi, headquarters of the UNESCO Office in Venice, is part of the 61st International Art Exhibition – Venice Biennale and is open until June 28. It will then continue its international tour with a presentation in Brussels, during the closing event of S+T+Arts Aqua Motion, and with other European events. After Venice, "Thermal Alchemy" will become a permanent exhibition at the Museum of Ancient Thermalism in Montegrotto Terme.
