A journey to discover the still active freshwater sources in the Euganean area.

It starts right from the Museo del Thermalism antico e del territorio of Montegrotto Terme the documentary film “Euganean Springs”, Conceived and created by journalist Gianni Biasetto and photojournalist Nicholas Piran: a journey to discover the historic freshwater springs still active in the Euganean Hills.

This is no coincidence. Our museum houses artifacts and testimonies that demonstrate how these resources were already known, studied, and expertly exploited in Roman times. Chiara Destro, archaeologist and president of the Lapis association, which manages the museum on behalf of the Municipality of Montegrotto Terme, leads the authors through the relics that document the techniques used to intercept and transport water in the Euganean area three thousand years ago: from the trachyte pipes – the “prince” stone of the Euganean Hills – which connected the springs to the cities in the area, to the source known as “Buso della Casara”, an underground spring that the Romans managed to convey for kilometres through a sophisticated system of pipes.

A long history ties these lands to the region's most precious resource: from the 8th century BC with the sacred waters of the Venetian sanctuary of San Pietro Montagnon, to today's Euganean spa treatments, still recognized for the anti-inflammatory properties of the natural muds that form upon contact with the clays of the so-called "laghetti," the thermal springs dotting the Euganean Hills. A story, in short, that has never truly stopped.
